I graduated from The Royal Veterinary College in 1976 and fell in love with feline practice a year later when, after a hard winter spent grappling with cows and sheep in West Wales I decided I needed to thaw out and gain some experience treating domestic pets.
I was thrown in at the deep end, single-handedly running a branch practice of a large, hospital based London group but was delighted to find that the majority of my patients were cats.
It took another 25 years and two practices later for the demographics of pet ownership in the rest of U.K to swing in favour of cat ownership and allow me to open The Cardiff Cat Clinic in 2002.
My original mission statement remains unchanged from 15 years ago – to provide the highest standard of patient care and client service.
Now, let me introduce you to the rest of the team because they are all too modest to blow their own trumpets.
Dr. Wilkie graduated from the Royal Veterinary College with Honours in 2012. She worked for 6 months in a clinic for geriatric cats (she loves an oldie!) before completing a 3 year PhD in feline cardiology. Part of her PhD involved travelling around the UK performing heart scans.
It was during this time that she first visited and fell in love with the Cat Clinic. We kept in touch and as soon as she had completed her doctorate she joined us. I had been single-handed for fifteen years and had never met a vet who I felt was right for the Clinic. Lois ticked all the right boxes. She loves cats, is great with people, is genuinely kind and compassionate and regularly astounds me with the depth of her veterinary knowledge.
Victoria flattered me in her interview by telling me she had been waiting for ten years for a job in the Cat Clinic to appear. The flattery, although much appreciated, wasn’t necessary because her CV was impressive enough. Manager of a R.S.P.C.A. hospital for five years followed by a five year stint as Head Nurse in a Cardiff small animal practice.
What convinced me that she was the right person for the job was her ability to grasp immediately the ethos of the Cat Clinic, her managerial skills and enthusiasm for our expansion plans.
